Keep the units attached to every number: field dimensions produce volume, supplier data converts volume to weight, allowances change the order quantity, and verified payload determines loads. Mixing loose, compacted, and bank measurements can distort both material and hauling estimates.

Volume is geometry

Length, width, and placed depth determine cubic volume before density or compaction is considered.

Density is material-specific

Gradation, moisture, source, and compaction state affect tons per cubic yard. Ask the supplier for the quoted material.

Allowances need names

Separate compaction, waste, irregular grade, and contingency instead of hiding them in one unexplained percentage.

Payload controls loads

Truck or trailer volume does not override legal weight, axle, tire, hitch, or tow-vehicle ratings.

Reconcile tickets

Put this guide to work

Measure the finished area and depth, name the volume basis, and record the supplier's material description and density source. Keep compaction, waste, irregular grade, and contingency as separate allowances so each can be reviewed instead of hiding them in one percentage.

After delivery, total the scale tickets, count loads, remeasure the placed work, and note leftover material. Update a density or allowance only when the material source, moisture, placement method, and units are comparable to the next job.

Worked material and load example

A rectangular area 60 feet long by 12 feet wide at a 4-inch placed depth contains (60 × 12 × (4 / 12)) / 27 = approximately 8.89 cubic yards. If the supplier documents 1.4 tons per cubic yard for the quoted material and condition, estimated weight is 8.89 × 1.4 = approximately 12.45 tons. A separately stated 10% order allowance produces approximately 13.70 tons.

If the verified usable payload for the selected vehicle and route is 5 tons, round 13.70 / 5 up to three loads. Do not substitute bed volume for a weight limit or assume the example density applies to another source, moisture condition, or gradation. Material quantity and density questions

When should density and allowance be checked again?

Verify them for each quoted product and source and whenever gradation, moisture, supplier, placement method, compaction requirement, vehicle, or route changes.

Does the load count authorize a vehicle weight?

No. Confirm actual vehicle, axle, tire, hitch, trailer, tow-vehicle, route, permit, and legal limits with current official and manufacturer information before hauling.
