Track high-wear attachment work separately. Brush cutting, breaking, trenching, and power-rake work can change fuel burn, teeth or cutting-edge wear, cleanup, production, and exposure compared with bucket work.

Keep a small operating log

Record meter hours, billed hours, fuel added, attachment used, ground conditions, transport time, and unusual wear by job. Review the log after service intervals and tire or undercarriage replacement. Your measured cost history is more useful than a generic allowance because it reflects the machine, operator, terrain, and work mix that actually produce revenue.

Worked skid-steer hourly cost example

Suppose annual ownership, insurance, and storage total $18,000 and the machine is expected to bill 600 hours. Ownership recovery is $30 per billed hour. Add $8 for measured fuel, $12 for service and repair reserve, $7 for tires or track wear, $32 for operator burden, and $10 for allocated overhead. The illustrative loaded cost is $99 per billed hour before transport, job risk, attachment-specific cost, and profit.

Usually not. Use the actual tire or undercarriage replacement cost and service life for the current machine, terrain, and operating pattern.

When should the hourly cost be updated?

Review it at least quarterly and after a tire or track replacement, major repair, insurance or payroll change, attachment change, or material shift in billed hours and fuel burn.
